FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

What day will the disaster emergency response exercise take place?

On Sunday, October 22, 2023, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., the City of Augsburg will train for the safety of its citizens during a disaster emergency response exercise.

With around 800 training participants from fire departments, aid organizations, police and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief, it will be one of the largest exercises in the region to date.

Will there be any traffic restrictions?

On the morning of October 22, there will be a very high volume of rescue vehicles throughout the city, which will drive to the scene of the emergency with blue lights and sirens – but always with the principle of "safety before speed". This can lead to noise on site.

Between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m., there will be a full closure of Nagahama Avenue in the area of the loop tunnel. Closures will also affect Oberbürgermeister-Dreifuß-Strasse, Oberbürgermeister-Hohner-Strasse, Wolframstrasse, Theodor-Wiedemann-Strasse, Prinzstrasse and Lotzbeckstrasse. During this period, access is only possible to private parking spaces and underground garages. However, restrictions must be expected at all times.

There will be changes to the public transport timetable for bus line 36 and streetcar line 6. We kindly ask for your cooperation in this matter.

Are there diversions?

My street is closed - where can I park?

Residents can use alternative parking spaces for the duration of the exercise in Hofrat-Röhrer-Strasse 9 (Aldi parking lot), Friedberger Strasse 4 (upper parking deck of the technical university) and Prinzstrasse 49b (Rewe parking lot, access and exit possible on Sunday via Friedrich-Merz-Strasse). Free parking is available there from Saturday, October 21, 8 p.m. to Sunday, October 22, midnight.

How will the training be conducted?

The exercise will involve several operational scenarios in the districts of Am Schäfflerbach and Wolfram- and Herrenbachviertel, which will have to be handled by the Disaster Control Command Group (FüGK).

Details of the exercise will not be disclosed in order to maintain the realistic character for the emergency forces involved.

Can we be sure nothing has really happened?

The exercise is presented as realistically as possible. This includes, among other things, smoke occurrence, crashed vehicles, and injured (made-up) people.

Of course, "real emergencies" can also occur during this time parallel to the exercise scenarios. In that case, please dial the emergency number 112.

Why do such exercises take place?

Under the Bavarian Disaster Control Act (BayKSG), the district authorities are required to conduct full-scale disaster control exercises every six years. Full-scale exercises take place with the participation of all those obligated to provide disaster relief, including the City of Augsburg with the Office of Fire and Disaster Prevention, its Disaster Control Command Group (FüGK), a Local Operations Command (ÖEL) and the Augsburg Integrated Control Center, as well as fire departments, relief organizations, police and hospitals.

Can I observe the exercise?

The exercise is not designed as a performance. For safety considerations, among other things, the training sites will be cordoned off over a wide area. However, it is of course possible to stay beyond these barriers.

We understand that blue-light vehicles have a fascinating effect on children in particular. Since the depiction of accidents and injuries can have a very realistic effect on children and young people, we ask parents and guardians to carefully consider the effects of a confrontation with images and impressions.

Who can I contact if I have questions?
