English Book Club: Xinran: Miss Chopstics

This is a tale of three peasant girls in rural China getting to grips with life in the big city. Women, their father tells them, are like chopsticks: utilitarian and easily broken. Yet when circumstances lead them to seek work in distant Nanjing, they start to support their father who is forced to recognise their worth.
