Somewhere in apartheid Pretoria, Rachel Swart dies of cancer. On her deathbed, she forces her husband to promise to give the maid the house where she already lives. The conversation is overheard by Rachel’s teenage daughter, who spends the next thirty years attempting to convince her family to make good on her mother’s dying wish.
