The City of Augsburg has had, over the last 30 years, sister-city partnerships with six different cities on three continents. The stories behind these partnerships are different. Each initiative was however accompanied by the intention that it, as a contribution to international cooperation, however small, would lead to better understanding among different cultures and thereby to the safekeeping of world peace.

The official framework of the sister-cities program thus established, it was then over the years up to the citizens--as many as possible--to participate in developing contacts in various branches. These contacts continue to this day, and new ones are added regularly. From such "official" contacts have sprung personal friendships and it is above all from the numerous organizations and associations that the idea of sister cities continually receives new energy.
Today the gamut of contacts covers sports, art, music and local-culture groups, and student exchanges at all age levels.
